Vision and Philosophy
The Department of English for Global Communication, established in 2001, is under the College of Human Science and Social Innovation. Based on our school’s motto “Begin from oneself, extend benevolence to all”, in accordance with the educational objectives of our school and college, and consulting with the opinions of our department’s counselors and experts from industries, governments and academia, this department corresponds with the developmental trends of English profession and cultivates professionals of English teaching, international business, and tourism with global vision.

With a view to cultivating students’ employment competitiveness, in addition to basic curricula of listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation, we also established two modules of curriculum: English teaching and professional English. Our department also unites with other departments to offer such interdisciplinary programs as English leader and guide program, children English program, and cultural tourism program. Furthermore, to deepen the learning synergy of transver-sal connection to focus on English communication and translation competency needed in the workplace, our students are
encouraged to apply for the programs of minors, double majors and second specialty.

For years, our department has been recommending and sending dozens of students with the subsidy of the Ministry of Education abroad, such as the United States, Japan, Korea, Thailand for student exchange and dual degree programs. In addition, our department signed faculty and students’ mutual exchange agreements with Humber College of Canada to deepen students’ cross-cultural perspective and vision.

Highlights and Accolades

In curriculum planning, we divide our department-based curriculum into “English Teaching” and “Professional English,” and strengthen the elective courses that develop the two modules. Furthermore, we collaborate with other departments, plan the interdisciplinary integrated programs provided for students to choose from in order to enrich their knowledge and competence, and strengthen their specific specialties. Not only can students learn with expertise, but they can also analyze and assess things objectively, possess the competence of well-rounded thinking, induction, integration and problem-solving, with a view to adapt to the ever-changing business environment.

To achieve the educational objective of “learning for practice” of the Technological and Vocational Education, we enliven teaching content with related courses, academic-industrial cooperation, English projects and software and hardware to achieve the goal of combining the theory of “unity of knowledge and action” with professional skills. To highlight the practice-oriented feature of the Technological and Vocational Education, we request students to be sensitive to industrial trends. Field trips to business operation deepen students’ understanding, help students with personal course selection plan, and train practical and profession talents for the industry. Furthermore, inviting industrial specialists into class to teach or speak enhances the opportunities of connecting our students with industries. We also hold a variety of practical seminars, academic lectures and extension education, engaging in diverse project researches, actively exchanging with community industries, in hope that students can creatively apply theories and knowledge to real workplace career. Hence, student can understand and experience the importance of teamwork and interpersonal relationship.

Besides teaching and counseling students, our teachers take the cultivation and performance presentation of academic research seriously to elevate research competence. Exchange with the business industry strengthens teachers’ academic research and enhance the level of academic-industrial cooperation. Furthermore, we aim at working on practical projects and executing thesis projects. Our teachers actively encourage and advise students to apply for “MOST College Student Research Projects” and thesis presentation.

To comply with our school’s development feature of creative thinking and the coming of knowledge economy era, we meticulously plan “English Teaching Module” and “Professional English Module” to encourage students to participate in creative and startup activities and develop students’ competence of problem solving, innovative thinking and startup planning. In the future, we will engage in interdisciplinary collaboration more actively with other departments, encourage students to study abroad, explore English practicum sites for students, cultivate students’ diverse competence of professional English and expand their global vision.
